General Business Waste

Waste is essentially a misplaced resource. When placed in the right location for effective reuse, it becomes a resource. Recycling and reusing waste not only serve as raw materials but also reduce environmental pollution. Shifting from the concept of "proper disposal" to "zero waste" is crucial in waste management. Through practices such as green production, green consumption, source reduction, resource recycling, reuse, and regeneration, waste is viewed as a "misplaced resource." This perspective aims to achieve the goal of fully categorized, zero waste.

Post-lab liquid waste

The waste liquids from our school's laboratories are treated in accordance with the Environmental Protection Administration's Waste Disposal Act and the standards for the storage, clearance, and treatment of industrial waste. This ensures proper handling to maintain environmental quality.

(1) Refer to safety data sheets and compatibility tables provided by suppliers. Separate waste liquids into different containers based on their hazardous characteristics, including but not limited to:
  • Store acidic and alkaline waste liquids separately.
  • Cyanide-based waste liquids should be stored separately from acidic liquids.
  • Oxidizing substances should be stored individually.
  • Separate oxidizing substances from reducing substances.
(2) Waste liquid storage containers must adhere to the following specifications:
  • Use high-density polyethylene (HDPE) containers with a standard capacity of 20 liters, resistant to corrosion and acids. Maintain containers in good condition and cleanliness, replacing them immediately if damaged or leaking.
  • Affix a "Laboratory Waste Liquid Bin Classification Label" on the exterior of the storage container, clearly indicating the type and nature of the waste liquid, along with the storage date.
(3) Storage facilities for waste liquid bins must meet the following specifications:
  • The facility's ground should be sturdy, surrounded by corrosion-resistant and waterproof materials. If not feasible, use liquid trays with a volume at least 1.1 times the container capacity to prevent leaks.
  • Avoid storing waste liquid bins in high temperatures, direct sunlight, rain, or obstructed pathways. Do not stack the bins and keep them away from heat sources.
  • Clearly mark the area as a "Waste Liquid Storage Zone" and implement equipment or measures to collect or prevent contamination of groundwaters, air, and soil.
  • Assign a designated person for management to maintain good conditions and prevent unauthorized access or accidental leaks.

      Post-lab hazardous industrial waste

In our school, the handling of infectious medical waste follows the Environmental Protection Administration's Waste Disposal Act and the standards for the storage, clearance, and treatment of industrial waste. This is done to ensure appropriate treatment and to safeguard environmental quality.

      (1) Waste items such as needles, syringes, microbial culture dishes, strains, and related biological products fall under the category of infectious hazardous medical waste. They should be classified and stored separately from other types of waste.
      (2) Packaging and storage methods for infectious hazardous medical waste:
      • Sharp objects waste (e.g., needles, syringes): Seal in a sturdy container that is not easily penetrated. Before disposal, use leak-proof, tear-resistant, and red plastic bags labeled as infectious medical waste for collection. Storage is limited to one year.
      • Infectious waste: Pack in leak-proof, tear-resistant, and red plastic bags labeled as infectious medical waste. If stored in refrigeration between zero to five degrees Celsius, the storage limit is seven days. If frozen at zero degrees Celsius or below, the storage limit is thirty days.
      (3) The red plastic collection bags mentioned above should be purchased according to needs. Ensure they are properly filled out and affix the "Infectious Medical Waste Transport Form" on them.

      Abandoned bikes on campus grounds

To regularly clear abandoned items (bicycles) occupying the campus grounds, this center has formulated the "Campus Abandoned Bicycle Collection Operation Procedure" with reference to the "Criteria for Identifying Abandoned Vehicles on Roads and Reporting and Handling Procedures." We kindly request the responsible units in each area to use this platform to report the quantity of abandoned items (bicycles), facilitating the subsequent cleanup by this center in accordance with the "Waste Clearance Act."

Bicycles occupying campus grounds are deemed as waste under the following circumstances, and after being announced by the respective authority units in each area:
      1. Bicycles with obvious loss of original utility due to "dirt, rust, or damage" on the exterior.
      2. Bicycles that are "disassembled" and have lost their original utility.
      3. Bicycles parked in violation of regulations.
