Post-lab liquid waste

The waste liquids from our school's laboratories are treated in accordance with the Environmental Protection Administration's Waste Disposal Act and the standards for the storage, clearance, and treatment of industrial waste. This ensures proper handling to maintain environmental quality.

(1) Refer to safety data sheets and compatibility tables provided by suppliers. Separate waste liquids into different containers based on their hazardous characteristics, including but not limited to:
  • Store acidic and alkaline waste liquids separately.
  • Cyanide-based waste liquids should be stored separately from acidic liquids.
  • Oxidizing substances should be stored individually.
  • Separate oxidizing substances from reducing substances.
(2) Waste liquid storage containers must adhere to the following specifications:
  • Use high-density polyethylene (HDPE) containers with a standard capacity of 20 liters, resistant to corrosion and acids. Maintain containers in good condition and cleanliness, replacing them immediately if damaged or leaking.
  • Affix a "Laboratory Waste Liquid Bin Classification Label" on the exterior of the storage container, clearly indicating the type and nature of the waste liquid, along with the storage date.
(3) Storage facilities for waste liquid bins must meet the following specifications:
  • The facility's ground should be sturdy, surrounded by corrosion-resistant and waterproof materials. If not feasible, use liquid trays with a volume at least 1.1 times the container capacity to prevent leaks.
  • Avoid storing waste liquid bins in high temperatures, direct sunlight, rain, or obstructed pathways. Do not stack the bins and keep them away from heat sources.
  • Clearly mark the area as a "Waste Liquid Storage Zone" and implement equipment or measures to collect or prevent contamination of groundwaters, air, and soil.
  • Assign a designated person for management to maintain good conditions and prevent unauthorized access or accidental leaks.
